How to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4 without inflating the result.

Track ChatGPT traffic in GA4 through the Traffic acquisition report and session-scoped source dimensions. OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include `utm_source=chatgpt.com`. Filter the relevant session source, inspect landing pages and compare key events. Do not combine AI mentions, website sessions and revenue into one number unless the underlying records support each step.

The question this page answers

Measure visits from ChatGPT in Google Analytics 4

1

Use the session-scoped acquisition report

In GA4, open Reports, Acquisition and Traffic acquisition. This report focuses on sessions and includes dimensions such as Session source and Session source / medium. Search for ChatGPT-related source values and preserve the exact filter used so later comparisons remain consistent.

2

Connect the visit to the page and action

A source count becomes more useful when it is broken down by landing page, engaged session and configured key event. Check whether visitors reached a scan, signup, booking or another commercial step. Exclude internal and test traffic where the implementation supports it.

  • Sessions from the identified ChatGPT source
  • Landing page used
  • Engagement and configured key events
  • Known internal or test traffic exclusions
  • CRM outcome only when a trusted record exists
3

Keep attribution honest

A ChatGPT referral can show that a session arrived through a tagged link. It does not prove which earlier answer created the interest, and direct or untagged visits may remain unattributed. Report observed referral traffic, then add buyer-reported or CRM evidence as separately labeled layers.

Questions buyers ask next

Where is Traffic acquisition in GA4?

Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. An editor may need to add the report back if it was removed from the property's navigation.

Why use Session source instead of First user source?

Session source describes the source for the current session. First user source describes how a person was first acquired and answers a different question.

Can GA4 prove that an AI recommendation caused a sale?

Not by itself. GA4 can preserve acquisition and conversion evidence, but causality and complete buyer journeys require additional evidence and careful attribution.
