ResourcesBuyer guide

What permissions should an autonomous SEO or website agent require?

An autonomous website agent should request only the permissions required for the approved action. Monitoring can remain read-only. Drafting needs no public write access. Publishing should be scoped to one workspace, destination and content type, with explicit approval or a narrow pre-approved policy. The owner must be able to revoke access immediately and inspect every action afterward.

The question this page answers

Define permissions for an autonomous website and SEO agent

1

Which access should be separated?

Keep analytics reading, content drafting, CMS publishing, CRM reading and external submissions as different permissions. A product that can read Search Console does not automatically need to modify WordPress. A website publishing token should not provide CRM or billing access.

2

How should agent tools be scoped?

Expose small, explicit operations with workspace and resource identifiers. Require authentication and validate authorization on every call. MCP can standardize tool discovery and invocation, but the application still owns access control, consent and safe defaults.

  • Prepare
  • Approve
  • Publish and verify
3

What should the audit trail contain?

Record the actor, workspace, tool, parameters, source evidence, approval, destination, result, time and failure state. Preserve the exact artifact before and after the write. Logs should support incident review without exposing unrelated customer data.

Questions buyers ask next

Should an agent use a human administrator password?

No. Use a scoped integration, token or OAuth grant that can be revoked without affecting the person’s account.

Can approval be delegated to another agent?

Only under an explicit policy with clear authority, limits and auditability. High-impact public claims may still require human review.

Does MCP provide authorization automatically?

No. MCP defines a protocol for tools and context; the product must implement authentication, authorization and approval controls.
