AI search visibility score: what the percentage does and does not prove.

An AI search visibility score usually represents the share of eligible measured answers in which a brand was named, recommended or cited. The exact definition matters. A trustworthy score excludes unavailable provider checks, keeps mention and citation criteria explicit, preserves the underlying answers and never treats the percentage as search volume, market share, traffic or revenue.

The question this page answers

Interpret an AI search visibility score correctly

1

What belongs in the denominator?

Only completed, eligible measurements should count. Provider failures, blocked requests and malformed responses must remain visible but excluded. Mixing different questions, countries or model versions without labels can create movement that reflects the sample rather than the market.

2

What counts as visibility?

Define whether the brand must be named anywhere, recommended as an option, cited through its own domain or described positively. These are different events. A dashboard should let the user inspect the literal answer behind every counted observation.

  • Brand mention
  • Recommendation
  • Owned-domain citation
  • Sentiment and position
3

How should the score guide work?

Use repeated losses to identify a focused opportunity, then inspect the cited sources and existing website. After a verified change, compare later observations on substantially the same question and provider mix. Report uncertainty when the sample is too small.

Questions buyers ask next

Is an AI visibility score the same as share of market?

No. It describes the measured answer set, not all buyer activity or total market demand.

Can a score fall when nothing changed on the website?

Yes. Provider answers, retrieval sources and sampled questions can change independently.

What score should a company target?

Target improvement on the commercially important questions where the company is genuinely eligible, not an arbitrary universal percentage.
