AI search internal linking: connect every page to a real buyer decision.

Internal linking for AI search connects related pages into a clear decision path. A category hub should link to distinct comparison, use-case, proof, pricing and implementation pages with descriptive anchors. Each spoke should link back to the hub and onward only where the next page helps the reader.

The question this page answers

Build internal links for an AI search topic cluster

1

Give every page one owned purpose

Map the primary intent and canonical URL for each page before adding links. If several pages answer the same question, consolidate them. Clear ownership reduces cannibalization and makes anchor text more meaningful because a link points to the strongest destination for that decision.

2

Use contextual and descriptive anchors

Place links where the related decision naturally arises. Describe what the reader will find instead of using ‘click here.’ Keep important pages reachable from crawlable navigation and avoid relying on client-only interactions that hide links from search systems.

  • Hub to distinct spokes
  • Spokes back to hub
  • Descriptive anchor
  • No orphan pages
3

Audit the graph after every release

Check for broken links, redirect chains, orphan pages and hubs with too many undifferentiated destinations. Compare internal links with sitemap entries and canonical tags. A page that exists in the build but is disconnected from the site is not a finished publication.

Questions buyers ask next

How many internal links should a page have?

Use as many as genuinely help the reader reach related decisions; there is no useful universal number.

Do exact-match anchors help AI search?

Descriptive anchors help explain destination context, but repeated unnatural exact-match phrasing is unnecessary.

What is an orphan page?

A public page with no meaningful crawlable links from the rest of the site, making discovery and navigation harder.
