AI citation decay: when should a cited page be refreshed?

AI citations can appear in one answer and disappear in another because questions, retrieval results, provider models and the web change. There is no universal citation half-life. A defensible refresh process stores when each URL was first and last cited, the exact question and provider, repeated occurrence counts and the page's own change history. Refresh only when comparable evidence shows a meaningful loss or a fact has become stale.

The question this page answers

Monitor when AI citations appear, disappear and need a refresh

1

Which timestamps make citation movement useful?

Store the answer time, provider and model, market and language, citation URL, first-seen time, last-seen time and most recent successful recurrence. Keep failed or unavailable checks outside the completed-answer denominator so an outage does not look like citation loss.

  • First seen
  • Last seen
  • Occurrence denominator
  • Provider and question cohort
2

What should trigger a refresh?

Refresh when an important fact is stale, the cited page no longer answers the buyer's decision, the source has become inaccessible or repeated comparable checks show that a stronger current source replaced it. One missing citation in one run is noise, not an automatic rewrite order.

3

How should the refresh be verified?

Snapshot the existing page, update only the supported sections, verify the canonical public result and remeasure the same questions after a declared cooling period. Report discovery, citation, recommendation, visits and conversion evidence separately because a refreshed page does not guarantee any external outcome.

Questions buyers ask next

What is the half-life of an AI citation?

No universal half-life has been established. Measure recurrence for the same URL, question, provider, market and period instead of applying one global number.

Should a page be updated every time a citation disappears?

No. Require repeated comparable evidence or a verified factual freshness problem before changing a useful page.

Can a refresh restore a citation?

It can improve freshness and usefulness, but the provider controls retrieval and source selection. The result must be observed later.

Use this answer as a measured decision, not a ranking trick.

Question: preserve the exact commercial buyer question, provider, market, language and completed-answer denominator.

Evidence: inspect the literal answer and cited URLs, then verify product facts against the sources below.

Action: improve a relevant existing page first. Create a new destination only when the buyer intent is genuinely distinct.

Result: verify the public URL and remeasure the same cohort. Keep recommendations, visits, leads and revenue as separate evidence.
